Kash and Sherry's crazy life. bio picture

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG!

Thanks for dropping by to visit our blog. We're new to all of this viral marketing, so bear with us as we get our feet wet. My wife Sherry and I opened Classical Photography way back in 1994, back when everyone still used film. While we were the first studio in West Georgia to go digital in 1999, we're just now embracing some of the new online options. We think you'll enjoy viewing some of the day to day work we'll be posting on here. In addition to that, we'll also be sharing some of what goes on behind the scenes as well. Feel free to share your comments with us, we love to hear them.

Over the past 14+ years, we've seen our studio start in a modest 400sq ft location in downtown Carrollton, to eventually filling two buildings and 9600 sq ft, just off the square. Now we're blessed to occupy a brand new home studio just south of Carrollton. This custom built location sits on 31 acres and provides us with an enourmous amount of flexibility in creating beautiful images for you and your family. One of the primary advantages we have here is our outdoor, hollywood backlot we've nicknamed...'Redneck Disneyland'. While it looks like a hodgepodge of sets and shooting areas, it's truly one of a kind for this area.

It also has been a great location to raise our two beautiful daughters, Audrey and Sophie. Audrey turned eight in January and Sophie turned three just this month. We look forward to seeing them explore and play on the land here as they grow up. So far, the woods are a 'scary' place to them, but i'm sure their sense of adventure will take over before long.

We hope you enjoy what we share here and remember, we'd love to hear your comments on what you see.

Thanks, Kash and Sherry.

Underwater portraits!!

Here’s our first true attempt at underwater portraits. We’ve been gearing up for this ever since we had our pool finished last spring. We’ve worked through the majority of the kinks and we’ve still got a few more hurdles to cover, but everything seems highly plausible now. Many thanks to Kandiss and Gretchen for their tireless efforts in the pool during this shoot. It was not easy for them, but the results are outstanding.

I’m loving this! It’s outrageously fun to shoot and completely different from anything else being created in our area. I’ve got to thank someone I don’t even know though…Howard Schatz. Mr. Schatz is the foremost expert on underwater portraits and truly originated the art form about 15 years ago in the pool behind his house. Without his inspirational images, I wouldn’t be heading down this path.

Here’s a handful of images from this first session and i’m already planning a second…and a third…and a fourth! Keep looking out for more to come. For those who are interested, yes, this is a background in the pool. We used SoftSpin from American Photographic Resources out of Texas. It works great underwater and is easy to work with.

I love this mirrored image look...very ethereal.

Loft Apartment….Downtown Carrollton

We have a loft for rent…this is the upstairs of the original location of our business in downtown Carrollton. We renovated this loft back in 2002 and lived there until 2007. It’s an amazing space that can be residential or commercial. We’ve previously had families in here, but we’ve thought that a group of college students would have a great time in here being so close to the nightlife downtown. A few details about the space… the building was originally built in 1885 as Moore’s Opera House, with the Opera House being the upstairs of the building. We’re thinking it was Can-Can dancers and vaudeville, but i’ve yet to see any documentation of what was performed here. The heart pine floors are original and the ceilings are 14 foot high. The windows are all 9 foot high and make a statement for this space. It was featured on HGTV’s ReZoned back in 2007, with a focus on having a mix of commercial and residential living. You’ve got Camacho’s brick oven pizza downstairs, next door and you’re walking distance to every restaurant and bar downtown.

This loft has three bedrooms and three full baths with two of the bedrooms being large enough to hold two people each. There’s abundant parking in the back of the building or at the parking deck across the street. The wonderful thing about this space though is the great room, which is 24 foot x 42 foot and holds the kitchen, dining and living areas. You’ll love the walk in closests too.

And…we have a sister space right next door to this one with the exact same amount of square footage (2400), but it’s completely open. It would make a great addition for a private club for one of the fraternities or sororities at UWG. It has the same look with one bathroom and a whole lot of space. Combine these two together and start thinking “Real World-Carrollton”. It would truly be an unbelievable college experience.

If you’re interested in the space, just contact Kash Johnson at kash@classicalphoto.com and we’ll provide additional details.

Here’s the open space…the kitchen may look small…but trust me it’s not. The room is just huge.loft4

More Seniors!!

Our senior season is in full swing now. We’re still getting a few last minute Class of 2009s and lots and lots of 2010 seniors. It makes for a fun and hectic summer. We’re hoping the heat will hold off a bit, but Georgia is known for this overbearing heat/humidity combination and we’re getting it now. Here are some great images from a Villa Rica and Heard County senior. Kylee and Brooke were both lots of fun to work with and truly, it’s hard to take a bad image of either young lady. Congratulations to Kylee on graduation and good luck to Brooke with her senior year.km82Can you believe those eyes? I’ll take credit for the nice lighting, but everything else is all Kylee…km61km60

The barn has been a great location to work with. We really enjoy shooting in here and so do the seniors!

km48km38

Yes we still do the drape images…as long as the school photographer’s continue to do such a crappy job, we’ll still make sure we do a great one for you.km32km28km26

Our window light room has been a great addition. I still haven’t figured out all of the cool ways to photograph in it, but once again, it really makes the eyes look amazing.km95

Once again….what eyes! This is one of my favorite spots to photograph right now and everyone looks amazing right in that same spot. I know we run the risk of having others say…”all the images look the same.” Well, if everyone looks stunningly amazing, then I think that’s a benefit, not a drawback.b17

The field is looking great right now…this was actually a few weeks back, but now we’ve got flowers coming up in it as well….we love being in the country!b16b15

I know it’s an old, rusty truck, but anytime  you put someone as gorgeous as Brooke in front of something as rustic as this truck…they just look even better.b14

Did i say we were in the country?…Who in the country doesn’t have a tractor…:-)b13

Love the hammock shots this year…i wish i had moved it in the barn two years ago!b11b10

The flowers are gone now, but we’re trying to find a way to get them back.b9

Brooke’s looking great again…she’s outstanding in our field…:-)b8

Didn’t i tell you everyone looks amazing right here…well it does help that Brooke’s gorgeous too.b5

Oh, and we do still create great images inside too. We feel that this mix of indoor/outdoor is very important.b4

I don’t remember girls in the band looking this good when i was in high school.b3

Brooke’s from Heard Co. H.S. and those are authentic Heard Co. high school lockers….circa 1985.b1

Can’t you see why we love what we do….

Day Trip..ok three hour trip!

Sunday, we packed up the girls and headed to Atlanta for some rain or shine fun.

We decided on Imagine It! The Childrens’ Museum of Atlanta for our rainy day destination. We opted to park in the garage under the American Cancer Society building. Like many of you, we drive an SUV. Parking garages are not made for SUVs, at least not the one we parked in! The garage had these three foot in diameter concrete posts in the middle of the two way driving lanes. The Expedition cleared the garage by about eight inches. But Sophie was quick to tell us how cool it was!  Oh, to see the world through the eyes of a child…

Once we got inside the museun, Sophie really enjoyed going from activity to activity but I think her favorite station was the moon sand since we kept going back there. This moon sand is the coolest stuff. It has a texture of sandy cornstarch and you can mold it and shape it like play dough, but it’s dry. She was quick to tell any child getting into her space that this was her work.

Audrey has been to the museum several times before and was not quite as thrilled about going as she used to be. It’s such a bittersweet feeling watching her grow up. I think she enjoyed watching Sophie but felt like she was too old to actually let us know she was having fun. They both seemed to enjoy painting on the wall…Something I hope Sophie doesn’t try at home! (She has written on the walls MANY times…but not paint.)

After we finished the museum it was not raining (!), so we walked over to Centennial Olympic Park. I’m still amazed that Atlanta has such a cool place to go in the heart of Downtown. We steered clear of the Rings Fountain because past trips of , ‘we’ll just look and not get wet’, have ALWAYS resulted in soaked clothes. Instead we walked down by the Coke shrine and around the other side of the park. By this point it had actually gotten hot, Sophie was ready for a nap and the next rain cloud was fast approaching. We made our way back to the confined parking garage and headed back to Carrollton….in the rain…!

OUR FIRST 2010 SENIOR!

Well, sort of. We’ve actually photographed close to 30 Class of 2010 Ambassadors since March, and we have over 80 scheduled right now, but Lorrie is actually the first 2010 senior to complete her entire session. This was definitely a great way to kick off the new season. She’s a gorgeous, intelligent young lady, who had knee surgery scheduled for a week after this session. Luckily, everything turned out ok. As you can tell, it’s not hard to make a pretty picture of her. Here’s a few of our favorites from her session.

BLOGGING…REALLY?…

Ok…i’ve arrived late to the party. Better late than never eh? This is our first blog post. This is our first blog. Nothing like one more piece of software to learn and master. But i have to say, the designer of the ProPhoto Blogs really knows what he’s doing. This has been a very intuitive process and I’ve been very impressed with all of the support available behind this sweet piece of software. I know that I’m getting started a bit late, but we’re planning on having lots of fun with this. A few friends have sworn to me this will be good for our studio and our clients over the long term. So, here we are….blogging!

We’re knee deep in all kinds of fun activities here at Classical and tomorrow is the last day of school for our oldest…Summer is here! I know Audrey is excited about it and around the studio, we’re looking forward to the Class of 2010 senior season kicking off. We’ll be sharing a bit of what’s new for this season, and some of the day to day work that keeps us busy, busy, busy.

Thanks for checking in!
